My Story ~ Alistair Mukondiwa, MBBChB
Rising Chief Resident 2026/2027

Hi, I’m Alistair Shingirai Mukondiwa, one of the rising Pediatrics Chief Residents.
I grew up between Masvingo and Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and now call Raleigh, North Carolina, home. I earned my medical degree at the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences, where I developed a global perspective on medicine and a deep appreciation for the role of physicians as community leaders. I also completed graduate studies in Beijing, China, as a Schwarzman Scholar, an experience that broadened my worldview and strengthened my commitment to global health.
My academic interests lie in Pediatric Cardiology and global health, and my work is guided by Hippocrates’ reminder that “wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity.”
Outside of the hospital, I love exploring pan-African history, reading African authors, weightlifting, and baking (ask me sometime about my Malva pudding!). Training at Wake Forest has been a joy; thanks to mentors who share my values and a supportive community. Both the serene beaches to the east and the majestic mountains to the west are the icing to the cake.
As Chief Resident, I’m excited to welcome and support my peers, contribute as a medical educator, and help shape an environment where residents can thrive both personally and professionally. I look forward to meeting you and sharing why Wake Forest is such a special place to train.
My Story ~ Ashley Frye, MD
Rising Chief Resident 2026/2027

My name is Ashley Frye and I will be one of the chiefs next year with Alistair!
I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but moved to Gainesville, Florida when I was in 1st grade. I went to the University of Pittsburgh for undergrad where I majored in Biology and Psychology. During undergrad I volunteered at the children’s hospital and fell in love with pediatrics. I then moved back to Gainesville and attended medical school at the University of Florida with the goal of becoming a pediatrician.
When I was going through the match process I knew I wanted a change of scenery and really fell in love with Wake Forest. I was impressed by the interview day and thought it seemed like a great place to train and the residents and faculty all seemed happy. I ended up coming to Winston Salem with my mom before making my rank list which helped solidify Wake as the place for me. I’ve always been interested in academic medicine, and discovered a passion in pediatric critical care so will be applying to PICU fellowship next year!
When not at the hospital I love doing things with my co-residents including hiking, going to breweries/wineries, and walking around Reynolda. I also love reading my Kindle, especially by my apartment’s pool. We’re so excited to meet you next year when you begin your pediatric residency journey!
