My Story ~ Amanda Karp, M.D.
Chief Resident 2025/2026

My name is Amanda Karp and I am one of the chiefs this year along with my pal Laura!
I grew up in Columbia, SC and stayed in South Carolina for both college and medical school. I attended Clemson University (go Tigers!) for undergraduate where I majored in Biology, then went on to complete medical school at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville, SC. During medical school, I had the opportunity to work closely with a pediatrician with a special interest in neonatal opioid withdrawal. We spent a summer conducting research in the newborn nursery, and during this summer I fell in love with pediatrics and knew it was the career path for me.
During medical school, I met my husband, Tanner (current anesthesiology resident). As we went through the couples' match process, we developed an interest in Wake forest because of their strong residency programs in both of our fields. Following the interview process, we knew that Wake Forest was the program we were most excited about, and we were thrilled to match here and train alongside such great attendings and co-residents in a new city that quickly felt like home. During my time here at Wake, I've developed a passion for outpatient pediatrics and the relationships I can build with families and children as their general pediatrician.
When not at work, I love spending time with Tanner and our dog, Finn, at breweries and on walks and hikes in the area. I also love cozying up and reading a good book or working on some of my crochet projects. I've also had the opportunity to build community with my local church and invest in kids outside of work through church volunteering. We're so excited for all of you to begin 3 exciting years of training!
